Want to be the only house in your street with your lights on when there is a black out? Want to make use of cheaper off peak rates but still use power when you want? Electricity can be stored in a battery bank to be used when it is more expensive or not available. Autonomous Energy's engineers can design the right system to meet your requirements. These systems fit perfectly with a grid connected solar power system to give you the ultimate energy autonomy while still having access to the grid as one of your sources of energy to make sure that your batteries stay fully charged, ready for when they are needed.
A typical battery backup system will consist of:
1) A battery bank which stores electricity.
2) An inverter/charger which will charge your battery bank when the grid is available and provide 240V AC power when the grid is down. This could be separate inverter and battery charger units in some cases.
3) A change over switch which switches the 'loads' (electricity consuming devices) from the grid to the inverter. This can be either a manual or automatic switch.
4) A solar power system which charges the batteries when the grid is down and feeds into the grid when it is available. This is not necessary for the battery backup system to work, but will greatly extend the amount of time the batteries can supply power to the house without the grid. (Optional)
The backup system could supply power to all of the loads in the house or just to selected important loads, depending on the requirements of the user. Generally, the more loads that are connected, the larger the inverter and battery bank required.
