We designed and delivered a customised and innovative commercial scale battery storage solution for a new luxury apartment building development in Mosman. The most pressing issue in the $24M development was to find enough electricity to meet the site’s increased requirements as it was transformed from a single dwelling property into six new luxury apartments. The existing network infrastructure could only supply 110 amps per phase which was not nearly enough to reliably power all the requirements of the site during peak demand periods. A network upgrade would have cost the developer several hundred thousand dollars and required a new transformer on site, however space simply wasn’t available. The feasibility of the entire development was therefore at stake. Autonomous Energy designed and implemented a ground-breaking energy management and battery storage system that charges batteries during low-consumption periods on off-peak tariff rates and then supplies power to the common areas, like the lift and car stacker, for the short periods when they run, eliminating their impact on the site’s peak load and avoiding the need for an expensive network upgrade all together.

The Autonomous Energy Solution

  • This battery storage system eliminated the need for a new transformer at the site, generating a zero year payback for the developer.
  • This commercial-scale battery storage solution automatically provides instantaneous power during times when the power demand of the building exceeds a set threshold, then charges back up during times of lower demand.
  • The batteries are charged during low-consumption periods on off-peak tariff rates and then supply power to the common areas, like the lift and car stacker, for the short periods when they run, thus eliminating their impact on the site’s peak load.
  • The batteries used are advanced lead acid manufactured by Ecoult with off grid Schneider inverters.
  • There is also a smart control system that manages key loads within each apartment as an additional safety layer should the load still approach the site limit.
  • Provides blackout protection so that in the event of a blackout, the battery system continues to provide power to key common areas loads.
  • This battery storage system was engineered and integrated by Autonomous Energy's in-house teams.
