Established in 1863, Newington College is an independent, Uniting Church, day and boarding school for boys, located in Stanmore, an inner-western suburb of Sydney, Australia. As a part of becoming more sustainable and taking control of rising electricity costs, Newington College, a leading independent boys school in Sydney, installed 108kW of solar power with Autonomous Energy. Newington College is one of Sydney's most successful and well-known independent schools.

Autonomous Energy solution

  • Autonomous Energy specified and designed the systems using our in-house team of Solar Energy Engineers.
  • Installation, completed in July 2014, was performed by Autonomous Energy’s own in-house installation team of CEC accredited solar installers, electricians and tradesmen.
  • An 88kW system has been installed on the Gymnasium and a 20kW system was installed on the Cavendish Building on Stanmore Road opposite the main campus.
  • Newington College chose to invest in Kyocera Solar Module technology coupled with Inverter technology from Power One, an ABB company.
  • Kyocera is one of the first companies to commercially produce solar panels some 40 years ago and have systems that have been operating for over 29 years and still exceeding the yield of many competitive systems that are much, much younger.  ABB are world leaders in electrical infrastructure equipment and are a very mature company.  Power One, now being a part of the ABB family is testament to their quality and innovation.
  • The combined systems generate 145,983kWh of energy per year with an indicative payback period of a little over 5.5 years.
  • Having made a site visit to another project at MLC, the Property Manager, Mr Stephen Bowden was very impressed with Autonomous Energy’s approach to quality and safety as well as the deep understanding of installing these systems to ensure that all components used in the installation of the system they would last as long as the solar modules.
  • Energy production data is captured using the Power One Aurora Vision system, allowing Autonomous Energy to monitor the performance of the system and allowing Newington College to use this data to display to parents and other stakeholders as well as to use in Science, Engineering, Technology and Maths classes.
  • A combination of quality components and equipment and technical experience and knowledge mean that Newington College will enjoy a solar PV system that will generate reliable, renewable energy for decades to come.
