Australia’s Largest Tesla Battery Installed

Australia’s largest Tesla battery installed behind the meter has gone live. Engineered & integrated by Autonomous Energy, the 2.6MW / 4.3MWh Tesla Powerpack battery is a key component of an autonomous microgrid installed at a large industrial site in South Australia.

The microgrid comprises a 4.3MWh lithium-ion battery, a 2.5MW solar PV system (6,500 solar panels) and a 2.5MW diesel generator all connected electrically and with fibre optic cable, and controlled by a custom-engineered microgrid smart control system.

The microgrid works in both on-grid and off grid modes, able to intelligently and instantaneously respond to various scenarios, ensuring reliability at the same time as reducing costs. From an energy security perspective - it’s ground-breaking ... in a blackout the whole site will automatically isolate from the grid and the microgrid system will supply the site’s entire electrical load with no interruptions.

All technologies used in this microgrid are scalable & modular, so they can also be deployed at larger or smaller sites. This means that anyone from a university, large industrial user, remote mine site or island, to a school, hospital, residential precinct or medium-sized business can achieve the savings and energy security benefits available from this type of project.

Sydney's Newest Sustainability Superstar

The Autonomous Energy team – in conjunction with Dexus and All Works Electrical – have delivered a unique solar project at 100 Harris St, Pyrmont. This heritage listed property was recently converted into a state-of-the-art office and one of Sydney’s newest sustainability superstars.

The project had its own inherent complexities - such as working with a heritage asset and a complex roof design. Our team completed additional works to ensure the historic building was safe for the installation of the 606 solar panels. The saw-tooth roof features a series of ridges with glass panels that diffuse natural light over a large area. And that saw-tooth design is now earning praise as a renewable energy powerhouse, with its distinctive shape ideal for solar panels.

The system is expected to deliver a reduction in CO2 of 322 tonnes per year, and the solar project overall will pay for itself within around 5 years. A great result for Dexus and the tenants of 100 Harris Street.

Introducing the Ausgrid Power2U Program

Autonomous Energy has been selected to implement the Ausgrid Power2U program, providing rebates for solar PV installed and LED lighting upgrades.

Up to $50,000 in rebates are available for solar PV and LED lighting implementations in the 2200 postcode area.

What is the Ausgrid Power2U program?

The Ausgrid Power2U program provides rebates of up to $250* per kW of solar PV and up to $100*/MWh of energy saved from LED lighting upgrades (approximately $100 per 15 lights). A single customer can receive up to $50,000 in rebates, for either solar PV or LED lighting upgrades.

Who is eligible for the rebate?

The rebate is available to all residential and business customers in the 2200 postcode (Bankstown, Condell Park and Bankstown Aerodrome). The total rebate funding is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Why is Power2U being offered?

Currently, 80% of the cost of maintaining the electricity network is related to the replacement of aged network infrastructure.

This cost of managing the electricity network is about a third of an electricity bill. Large scale electricity network upgrades can add to this cost. To help explore solutions which can manage this cost and therefore make electricity rates affordable over time, the Ausgrid Power2U program is being offered to customers in the 2200 postcode area. Incentives are available for those eligible to install solar PV and LED lighting - which will allow Ausgrid to manage the network more flexibly and improve reliability for customers.

Marymede Catholic College Solar PV System Now Operational

We are proud to have worked closely with Marymede Catholic College and specialist energy strategy firm, Mamachi, during 2018 on the design and installation of a 270kW solar PV system. The system is now operational on various roof spaces across the South Morang (Melbourne) campus - 100kW is located on top of the Trade Centre; whilst the other 170kW is operational across the Colleges Main Admin and Calthorpe (Library) buildings.

This system is expected to reduce the College’s annual electricity consumption by over a third, and save 200 tonnes of CO2 – which is equal to eliminating 60,000km of driving - over 10 years.

One of the key factors behind the shift towards solar energy was the ability to deliver curricular integration through the College's STEM disciplines as well as supporting Community Leadership Programs. In particular, the system on the Trade Centre roof is clearly visible - the system inverters are within observable reach of Marymede students for use in a range of curricular applications – helping teach the next generation of sustainable energy experts!
